Biography
Born in New Haven, CT, Ruth Bernard began her formal art education at
the School of the Worcester Art Museum and continued at Massachusetts
College of Art in Boston with a BFA in 1987 where she earned honors
in painting. She chose to continue her education at Queens College,
CUNY because of the many great cultural resources in New York. At Queens
College she finished at the top of her class; summa cum laude, earning
a MFA in 1987.
Over the years Ms. Bernard's work has changed, developing a mature theme
and is becoming more complex; with a strong connection to the history
of painting that remains strong.
Early on, as a young painter, she developed an affiliation with expressionism
and such artists as Van Gogh, Matisse and Beckman. Ms. Bernard often
went to the Yale Art Gallery to study the "Night Cafe". Later her interests
in expressionism continued as she investigated abstract expressionism.
She has always tried to combine both venues in her own work.
For the last 25 years Ms. Bernard has actively shown throughout the
eastern United States including Massachusetts, New York, Pennsylvania,
Delaware, Ohio, Maryland, and Georgia. She is a member of the Blue Mountain
Gallery in New York City. Other notable exhibitions include both solo
and group: Maryland College of Art & Design, Hewlett Packard Corporation
, Gettysburg College, Pennsylvania State Museum and the Massachusetts
State House.
Public collections of which Ms. Bernard is included are Lancaster Museum
of Art, Bank of Boston, Susquehanna Bank Shares, 'Wheat, First, Butcher
&Singer', Buchanan & Ingersoll and Coldwell, Heckels and Egan
Construction. She is also in numerous private
collections.
She has been included in Who's Who of America Women since 1996, Who's
Who in America East, since 1998 as well as other publications. From
her earliest development, Ruth Bernard has won awards for her work including:
1999 & 1993 fellowship at the Vermont Studio Center; 2000, Professional
Development Grant and Special Opertunity Stipen Grant from the PA Council
for the Arts.
Ms. Bernard has taught at Queens College, Pennsylvania School of Excellence
for the Arts, Pennsylvania School of Art & Design, Millersville
University, and York College. She is now teaching drawing and
printmaking at Lincoln University in Lincoln, PA.
