"The extremely lavish fruit and flower paintings have always intrigued me because their over the top depiction of the bountiful and lavish world. These paintings at the time where painted depicted the bounty of the land and as well as the riches that man could achieve for his self. These extremely opulent depictions seem particularly timely in today's extravagant and hedonistic world. Instead of the fullness of the earth's riches in Roesen's world I see a world of decadence and abuse. As I interpret a Roesen painting I use elements of expressionism using distortion and pushing or exaggerating the color. The paint is also used in a direct and with a heavily worked service. My attempt is to express a world no longer elegant and giving of riches, but one that is dangerous and verges on chaos." - Ruth Bernard
